WHAT ARE DIGITAL FOOD ENVIRONMENTS?

Digital food environments (DFE) refer to the use of technology and online services to communicate about food and nutrition, and make it simpler for us to find, buy, and enjoy the food we want.

Digital food environment actors include anyone involved in creating, delivering, or promoting food-related information or services in digital spaces. They are the individuals, companies, and organizations that contribute to shaping and influencing digital food experiences. Many actors work in both online and offline spaces, such as the food industry and governments, but some actors are based mainly online, such as social media influencers.

DFE actors

DFE activities

Digital food environment activities are the use of technology and digital platforms to make it easier to share food-related information and make food purchasing more convenient. Any food or nutrition-related activity performed in a digital setting is a DFE activity. These digital food and nutrition activities may be the same as those conducted offline, such as health promotion, food marketing, and food retail, but also include additional digital activities, such as influencer marketing and connecting with others.

DFE settings

Digital food environment settings refer to online platforms and virtual spaces where digital food and nutrition-related activities and

interactions take place, including social media sites, websites, blogs, apps, and video games.
